Capgemini: Building sustainable solutions from Calgary

With locations around the world – from the Philippines and New Zealand to Luxembourg and Egypt – Capgemini opened its Western Canada hub in Calgary in early 2022.

As a business and technology transformation partner, Capgemini paves the way in developing personalized digital transformation solutions for its clients in key technologies including cloud, data and artificial intelligence (AI).

CALGARY OFFICE OPENS AS CAPGEMINI’S WESTERN CANADA HUB

When Luke O’Regan, Vice President of Western Canadian operations, was approached to lead Capgemini’s expansion into Western Canada, his mission was clear: give meaning to the company’s presence in the region.

Enter, Calgary. Digital transformation and technology innovations have driven new solutions within Calgary’s energy industry for decades. On the path to net-zero, energy companies increasingly embrace new tech to improve their operations, curb emissions, produce sustainability reports and increase efficiency.

In fact, while the energy transition is projected to produce a $61 billion opportunity for Alberta, Calgary businesses are expected to lead the province’s $20 billion digital transformation spend by the end of 2024.

Capgemini has a rich history in supporting energy clients, and when paired with mounting evidence of a growing tech and startup ecosystem, and the over 100 head offices, Calgary emerged as an obvious choice for its Western Canada hub.

“After looking at the size and scale of global companies in Calgary, we didn’t have to think too hard – it was the obvious choice,” said O’Regan.

Two years after opening the Calgary office, Capgemini has a team of over 150 like-minded professionals serving clients across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

A SMART APPROACH TO DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

“Capgemini is deeply rooted in pioneering practices around sustainability and intelligent operations,” said O’Regan.

While Capgemini competes against a short list of global companies offering similar services, its “Intelligent Industry” approach sets the firm apart from others.

“We’re focused on the intersection of data and engineering, and that’s one of our significant differentiators,” said O’Regan.

O’Regan explained that data collected by companies can be leveraged to make key operational decisions. However, many companies don’t always have the expertise to interpret and analyze the data.

When clients wish to undertake significant digital transformations, Capgemini strategically maximizes their data collections, and deploys analytic capabilities to translate data into decisions that will benefit their business. In short, Capgemini leverages cloud, AI, internet of things (IoT), edge computing and 5G to build intelligent products and services for clients.

“With our experience in developing sustainable and innovation solutions for companies in global markets, we’re in a position to offer unique, intelligent solutions for Canadian clients,” said O’Regan.

Capgemini has seen this innovative mindset resonate with its Canadian clientele – especially in Calgary.

“Companies in Calgary are open to innovation and improvement – every Calgarian has a mentality where they want to get things done, with real results. Calgary’s culture helps us create, iterate and move forward real ideas that start small and materialize successfully,” shared O’Regan.

“The city has a perfect environment to cultivate innovation, and it’s a huge reason for our success.”

Like many businesses, Capgemini shares the vision of the economic strategy, Calgary in the New Economy, and sees the city as the place where bright minds and big ideas come together to help solve global challenges.

IGNITING CURIOSITY IN EMPLOYEES

Capgemini is hiring in Calgary today for people who can see beyond the characteristics, skills and traits needed today and for solutions that are in the infancy of discovery.

Just as the technology landscape is fast-paced and highly adaptable, the constant emergence of new innovations contributes to the evolution of Capgemini’s recruitment strategy.

“Our team is nimble and always ready to explore latest technology before it hits the market. This is how they’re able to provide cutting-edge services to clients,” said O’Regan.

With the team poised to grow in Calgary, O’Regan shared the two qualities sought after for new employees: a passion for technology, and eagerness to embrace new challenges.

While reflecting on the Calgary team to date, O’Regan says, “It may sound cliche, but it’s absolutely true. There's a profoundly entrepreneurial spirit that differentiates Calgary’s workforce.”

CALGARY’S TECH COMMUNITY OFFERS BRIGHT FUTURE

Ranked among the top 60 emerging startup ecosystems in the world, Calgary is rapidly emerging as a global destination for entrepreneurs and tech companies.

“The Toronto office was hearing all about Calgary’s tech community, and knew Calgary would be a good ecosystem to collaborate in, and serve our clients,” shared O’Regan. “Now, we’re seeing that for ourselves first-hand.”

Locally, Capgemini partners with several Calgary-based companies to deliver services beyond its purview to clients.

“We look out for local companies that have deep industry expertise in sectors and subject matters that our team isn’t positioned for, and subcontract to these companies. These partnerships demonstrate the extensive technical expertise and creativity emerging from Calgary right now,” said O’Regan.

Over the next five years, Capgemini is focused on a measured pace of growth to continue to meet client needs.

“We’re in the phase where we’re demonstrating our ability to deliver on our promise, build our track record and make sure our team not only increases in quantity but in quality,” said O'Regan.

“In the next three years, we intend to pursue measured, purposeful growth, including hiring more talent to our Calgary office.”
